QR codes are a convenient way to access information, make payments, and connect to Wi-Fi networks, but they can also be used by scammers to steal personal information and commit fraud.
As a parent, it is important to be aware of the risks associated with QR codes and to take steps to both inform and protect your children.
How QR Code Scams Work
QR code scams, also known as “quishing,” involve the malicious use of QR codes to deceive people into revealing personal information or downloading harmful software. Scammers can easily place fake QR codes over legitimate ones, or they may create posters that direct people to scan a QR code to receive a discount, enter a prize draw, or connect to a Wi-Fi network.
When someone scans a fake QR code, they are often directed to a fake website that looks like a legitimate website, or they could be asked to provide personal information, such as their name, address, phone number, or banking details.
How to Protect Your Children
There are several things you can do to protect your children from QR code scams:
Educate your children about QR code scams. Explain to your children how QR code scams work and what the risks are.
Be cautious of QR codes that are not from a trusted source. Only scan QR codes that you are sure are legitimate.
Check the URL before scanning a QR code. Most phones now show the URL that a QR code connects to before you scan it. Make sure the URL is legitimate before scanning the QR code.
Use the default QR code scanner on your phone. Avoid using third-party QR code scanners, as they may have been tampered with or compromised.
Keep your phone’s operating system up to date. This will help to protect your phone from known security risks.
Check for signs of tampering. If a QR code looks like it has been tampered with, do not scan it.
QR code scams are a growing threat, but by being aware of the risks and taking precautions, you can help to keep your family safe.
