Safer Internet Day 2025 will occur on the 11th of February 2025, with celebrations and learning based around the theme ‘Too good to be true? Protecting yourself and others from scams online’. The amazing team at the UK Safer Internet Centre run these each year and they are a very informative resource for parents and teachers alike.
This year the topic they have chosen is relevant to everybody and certainly something always at the top of the Cyber threat list, Online scams!
Safer Internet Day is a global event promoting online safety, celebrated in around 170 countries. It started in 2004 as an EU initiative and has since become a key date in the online safety calendar.
In the UK, Safer Internet Day is the largest event of its kind, focusing on a different online safety issue each year. This year’s theme is online scams, chosen based on input from young people across the UK. The goal is to help young people understand how to protect themselves and others from scams and where to find support.
Safer Internet Day aims to:
Understand the scale of online scams: By allowing young people to share their experiences, the event will shed light on how widespread the problem is.
Empower young people: The event will provide young people with the knowledge and tools to tackle online scams.
Raise awareness of specific issues: Building on existing work, the event will highlight issues like online financial sextortion.
Look to the future: Discussions will explore how technology like generative AI might impact scams and what role the government and internet industry can play in combating this threat.
Give young people a voice: The event will provide a platform for young people to share their ideas on how to improve online safety and protect themselves in the future.
