Anybody who has seen my other material on my blog or YouTube will have heard me mention that one of the dangers to children online is sharing pictures of themselves that they wouldn’t necessarily want friends and family to see. In the past this has led to some tragic circumstances with children and young teens taking their own lives.
My advice still stands that you shouldn’t share this type of imagery as you lose control over that image as soon as you press send.
Meta have just released something that can really help young people who may have made the mistake of sending images they have come to regret sending.
We’re announcing that Facebook and Instagram are founding members of Take It Down, a new platform designed to proactively prevent young people’s intimate images from spreading online.
We supported the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) in the development of Take It Down, building on the success of StopNCII, a platform we developed that helps adults stop the spread of their intimate images online.
We’ve also introduced some new features that make it more difficult for suspicious adults to interact with teens on Instagram.
Initially this will cover the Facebook and Instagram platforms but hopefully this initiative will draw on other social media platforms and hosting organisations in the future.
It is refreshing to see social media platforms taking these type of actions to help protect children and young adults and I applaud them for doing so.
